SEO: How to maximise your content to boost your SEO performance
I had a call recently from a business owner who had invested 6 months ago in an SEO expert. He wasn’t getting the results he wanted.
One question I asked is have they reviewed your website content, blog articles and put together a content calendar? The answer shockingly was no!
Content plays a key part in your SEO and should always be included in your marketing plan.
Here are some top tips –
1. Do your keyword research using the Google Ads Planner and Google search recommendations. You keywords should be used ‘naturally’ in your website content. Also, make sure you use your keywords in your page url, headings and SEO plug in – if you are using WordPress and do not have an SEO plug in, download Yoast SEO. For Wix and Squarespace platforms this will already be built in to the software and is automatically available to use.
2. Research what is trending and write about it. Give your expertise, thoughts and opinions. Here are some free and paid for platforms you can use to support this, put together by Element Three – 10 Tools to Find Trending Topics Online | Element Three
3. What are your customer challenges? Throughout the year, your customer challenges may change. For us at White Communications, we have seen many businesses recently having to adapt to now selling their products online and have needed to up their digital game on social media, email marketing and build their SEO from scratch. This is a great area to start with as an angle for topics as you’ll be meeting your potential customer needs and wants which will grab their attention.
4. Are you asked the same questions when you have an enquiry? Write these questions down as these make great articles for SEO. This will also help you to ensure your website services pages and home page content tells the potential customer exactly what they need to know, straightaway. Website visitors will not hang around or spend half an hour trying to find out what they need to know, they will go to your competitors.
5. Mix up your content with blogs, thought leadership pieces, video and infographics. Providing your readers with a mix of content types will not only keep your website visitors engaged but will also help Google to rank your website. Remember, Google does not read content on images so make sure if you are uploading Infographics you also provide a text based version underneath.
6. Write one long length article a month or as often as you can (min 3,000 words). So in terms of Google trust signals, long-form content has a much bigger impact but that isn’t the only ranking factor, make sure you are using keywords and create back links into the article. Your article also needs to provide value, quality is also really important and making sure it’s relevant to your business.
7. Write and provide commentary for other websites. Guest posts are articles written by you but sit on external sites. Guest posts can provide quality backlinks (make sure your article features your company name that links to your website) and can also drive new business. If you didn’t want to write articles you can also provide expertise as part of a bigger piece. These are commonly carried out within the media when they are looking for expert opinions for their articles. Not sure where you can post, here are some ideas – local and national media, i.e. newspapers and magazines, your partner and supplier websites, local associations and industry institutes.
I hope these content tips were useful and will help you on your way to improving your SEO performance.
